The Israel Under-20 Football Team celebrated its first ever quarter-final appearance at the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 after coming from behind to beat Brazil 3-2 in extra time at the Estadio San Juan del Vicentenario in San Juan, Argentina, on Thursday (4 June).
This is Israel’s first appearance at the tournament. Their first quarter-final appearance at a FIFA U-20 tournament has been eight years since Senegal in 2015.
Tied 0-0 at half-time, Israel proved to be a tough nut to crack as they hit back immediately after Brazil’s goal in the second half and extra time, before a stunning individual effort from Dor David Turgeman saw them come from behind to defeat the Brazilians.
“Turgeman’s exquisite strike earned Israel a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Brazil on his U-20 debut,” FIFA said of the match. Israel will meet the winner of the previous match between the USA and Uruguay, while Seleção (Brazilian nickname) will have to pack his bags to go home.”
“Ophir Haim’s (Israel’s head coach) team held on to complete a historic victory,” he added.
Israel finished runners-up at last year’s UEFA European U-19 Championship 2022. They struggled through a series of close calls throughout the tournament, but after a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Japan, they stood firm to reach the last four.
