Los Angeles Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman (34) goes for the record books.
Freeman started at second base in the lineup against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium in California, USA, on July 31, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs in a 7-0 victory. Freeman, who is batting .400 (12-for-30) over his last seven games, raised his season average to .338. He closed the gap on National League (NL) batting leader Luis Arajes (Miami Marlins – 0.349).
Against the Dodgers, Freeman blasted his 51st double of the season. With one out in the bottom of the fourth inning and a 4-0 lead, he pulled a four-pitch low curveball from Arizona right-hander Brandon Fout into the right-field seats. Freeman is adding to his record after hitting his 50th double of the season on Aug. 28 at Boston. The question now is whether he can reach 60 doubles in a season, a feat that has eluded anyone for more than 80 years.
According to MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball (MLB), only six players in MLB history have ever hit 60 doubles in a season. The record is 67 by Earl Webb (then of the Boston Red Sox) in 1931. He is followed by Joe Madwick (then St. Louis Cardinals – 64) in 1936, George Burns (then Cleveland Indians – 64) in 1926, Hank Greenberg (then Detroit Tigers – 63) in 1934, Paul Warner (Pittsburgh Pirates – 62) in 1932, and Charlie Herringer (then Detroit – 60) in 1936. “Four of the six players (Herringer-Greenberg-Madwick-Warner) have been elected to the Hall of Fame,” MLB.com added. 스포츠토토
Nick Castellanos (58) in 2019, Jose Ramirez (56) in 2017 and Matt Carpenter (55) in 2013 came close but fell short of the mark.
Freeman is a superstar who was the 2020 National League Most Valuable Player (MVP). He boasts a stellar individual career that includes seven All-Star nods and three Silver Sluggers. For his career (14 years), Freeman is batting .301 (6905-for-2081) with 317 home runs and 1130 RBIs. His 465 career doubles are second among active players, behind only Miguel Cabrera (Detroit-622).
