“I only put up spoons.”
Choi Jae-young, head coach of Sun Moon University, laughs as he mentions the name of his “predecessor,” current FC Seoul coach Ahn Ik-soo. Sun Moon University defeated Gwangju University 2-0 in the final of the 18th First and Second Grade University Football League Taebaek Sangi on Sunday at the Taebaek Sports Complex in Taebaek, Gangwon Province. In the 10th minute of the second half, Jung Sung-yeop tied Lee Eun-pyo’s wedge goal just before the end of the game to seal the victory. For the second year in a row, Sun Moon University has reached the top. The team won the ‘Star’ for the third time in its career (2006-2022-2023), and also won three consecutive underclassmen tournaments, including the 19th 1st and 2nd grade college soccer tournament held in Tongyeong in January. They have established themselves as a powerhouse in the underclassmen tournament.
Head coach Choi Jae-young said, “We were actually worried about our poor league performance while preparing for this tournament. I think the players found their confidence while playing. That’s the biggest achievement. They are students before they are soccer players. Basically, they are doing well in school. I think they did well on the field. I think they did a good job in tough situations.”
After playing cautiously in the first half, Sun Moon University sealed the victory with an aggressive attack in the second half. “We knew (the opponent) was going to play defense,” Choi said. How we receive the ball in the final area was the most important thing. It wasn’t easy in the first half, but it worked well in the second half. I think it paid off,” he said.
Choi took over the reins at Sun Moon University in November 2021, succeeding Ahn, who left to take charge of FC Seoul. Since joining the program, he has led a “renaissance” at Sun Moon University with consistent results. Choi said, “Dr. Ahn has created a good culture. I only put up spoons. During the U-League, I didn’t perform well, so I called the coach and ‘whined’. He advised me, ‘If you have passion and do your best, good results will come,’ and I think I followed his advice.”
He also said, “Coach Ahn didn’t talk to me before this tournament.메이저사이트추천 I’m grateful that I was able to make an excuse to call him. I added a little bit to his buildup soccer. I’m grateful to have such a great position as a college coach. Luckily, we have a good team. The players are mentally strong. I don’t have to say much, they do it themselves. “I felt a little bit of pressure (immediately after my arrival) because we had such a good team. There was a little bit of impatience to keep it together. We have to work hard to improve.”
Choi is looking forward to winning the 59th Korea University Games in August. “In the last Spring Games, we were negligent in our preparation. We had some players who suffered from enteritis, so the results were not good. We will prepare with good unity and control our physical condition.”
